For more than two decades, St. Anthony’s Medical Center in St. Louis County, Missouri has relied on Guarantee Electrical for electrical contracting support for new construction as well as ongoing service and maintenance projects at its busy healthcare campus.
Guarantee was selected in 2007 to serve as the design-build electrical contractor for St. Anthony’s multi-phased renovation and expansion – a $91 million project exceeding 220,000 square feet, completed in 2009, including:
- A 140,000-square-foot patient tower with 10 new operating rooms.
- A 10,000-square-foot pediatric emergency department.
- A 70,000-square-foot renovation, including renovation of 16 operating rooms with associated technology updates, a new south entrance, and other cardiology and cardiovascular services.
- Two new 15 kV services with two separate feeders from Ameren UE’s electric grid.
- New critical life safety systems.
Working on a design-build team led by McCarthy, Guarantee surveyed the facility’s existing electrical distribution systems to ensure a solid electrical infrastructure for the planned expansion and renovation. Guarantee recommended and implemented upgrades in the central power plant that replaced outdated generators, automatic transfer switches and electrical distribution panels that had served specific areas in the hospital. The implementation included two 480-volt generators paralleled for a single emergency distribution location for the facility. In addition, the other disciplines upgraded the medical vacuum, medical air and chiller systems. The upgrades enhanced overall systems reliability and power efficiency, and eliminated power surges tied to outdated equipment.
The team produced coordinated drawings for electrical power, lighting, plumbing, fire protection and mechanical systems. Guarantee’s preconstruction team provided color-coded constructability drawings to field personnel, allowing for more efficient installations. During preconstruction and continuing through the construction and renovation process, Guarantee identified potential issues early and provided recommendations and cost estimates to guide the owner’s decision-making.
Since the design-build contractors (mechanical, electrical and fire protection) were involved at an early stage, the team was able to develop a comprehensive phasing plan that allowed for the most efficient and economical process and required the fewest disruptions to facility operations.
The project was implemented in multiple phases to reduce disruptions and to maintain a minimum of 16 operating rooms (ORs) available during the entire project. Phase one involved completing upgrades to the central plant and construction of the new patient tower with 10 new operating rooms. The next several phases entailed renovating existing operating rooms while maintaining a minimum of 16 operating rooms (new, existing or renovated) until all existing ORs were completely upgraded. The last phase was to relocate the facility’s cardiology and cardiovascular labs from the lower level to the first floor. Throughout the project, the constructability drawings shared among all team members heightened total team performance and delivered superior quality along with cost and time savings to the owner.
