The new Mercy Joplin Hospital is scheduled to open on March 22, 2015, an unprecedented 46 months after an EF-5 tornado leveled the previous hospital in the Joplin, MO community.  From the outset, a level of resilience from the community inspired from the entire construction team, led by McCarthy Building Companies.  For Guarantee Electrical Company, this project was as much about doing what’s right for a community as it was leading the electrical pre-construction, construction and systems implementation.  According to Doug Mertzlufft, President of Guarantee Electrical, “Hospitals are an interwoven, integral part of the fabric in any community.  For many of the people in Joplin, this new hospital not only represents closure but signifies a new beginning for their community.  We are proud to have had the opportunity to work with the residents of Joplin, McCarthy Building Companies, HKS and Heideman & Associates on this project.”

The new 900,000 square foot $465 million facility includes a nine-story patient tower as well as a five-story clinic and includes all services featuring state of the art intelligent building systems for emergency reception, medical surgical, intensive care units, labor & delivery, behavioral health and rehabilitation.  For its part, Guarantee Electrical was instrumental in its collaborative use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) to provide consistent design and constructability models, as well as visualize clash detection in advance of actual construction.  Additionally Guarantee pre-fabricated many of the electrical components, such as headwalls, off-site and utilized just-in-time delivery thereby allowing for a much less congested and safer working environment while simultaneously installing the entire building management systems, delivering on a truly integrated project.

Within weeks of the tornado Guarantee Electrical forged a relationship with Joplin based Vangel Electric, and worked as a subcontractor to Vangel on the interim hospital.  The GECO-Vangel partnership continued throughout construction of the new hospital and Vangel will continue providing all of the electrical warranty and maintenance work on the new hospital.
